Job Description

Make a lasting difference in the life of a deaf child and their family.

Are you Deaf or Hard of Hearing and passionate about supporting children and families? Do you believe in the power of language, culture and connection?

Deaf Connect is looking for a compassionate and inspiring casual Family Mentors to support deaf children and their families during the early years of life. In this rewarding role, you'll share your lived experience, model visual communication and Auslan, and help families build confidence as they navigate their journey with a deaf child.

This is more than a job – it's an opportunity to be a positive Deaf role model and help shape a child's future.

About the role:

As a Family Mentor, you will work directly with deaf children and their families in natural home and community settings, helping them develop communication skills, confidence and connection to Deaf culture.

You will:

  • Be a positive Deaf role model for children and families
  • Support early parent-child bonding and communication
  • Model Auslan and visual communication strategies
  • Share lived experience and Deaf perspectives
  • Help families understand the many ways of being deaf
  • Support language development, literacy and learning through play and storytelling
  • Provide practical communication tools that families can use in everyday life
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists and other professionals to support individual child goals

Every family is different, and your guidance will help them build the skills and confidence they need to thrive

About you:

We would love to hear from you if you are:

  • Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • A fluent Auslan user
  • Passionate about supporting children and families
  • A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic about sharing Deaf culture, language and lived experience
  • Comfortable working with families in home and community environments

Highly regarded

  • Knowledge of early childhood development
  • Understanding of first language acquisition and language development in deaf children
